MultiIconMover: Move More than one Icon on the iPhone

MultiIconMover is a free app for jailbroken iPhones on Cydia.

What MultiIconMover does is it allows you to select more than one icon to move from one screen to another quickly and easily.  All you have to do is hold down your finger on an app as if you were going to move it, then when the icons start wiggling, click on each app that you want to move and you’ll see a check mark on each one.  Then all you have to do is move to the screen that you want to move your icons to, and then hit the home button.  This will move all of your selected apps to the desired screen.

It’s free and does what it was made for.  I’m giving this 5 stars.  Watch the video above for a demonstration, and let me know what you think in the comments.

Quick Review: Pocket Legends iPhone Client

Pocket Legends is a free MMO with two different clients, one for the iPhone and one for the iPad.  Image gallery at bottom of post.

pocket legends game logo. Quick Review: Pocket Legends iPhone Client

I couldn’t wait to download Pocket Legends once I heard it was out for the iPad, the only problem is that I’ve pre-ordered the 3G iPad, and I have yet to get it.  So I heard the iPhone client came out, so I instantly wanted to play it.  I’ve spent a little bit of time with it (level 10 warrior), so I wanted to shed some light on what the game is like.

First of all, after creating your account, you have the option of creating 3 different types of characters, a warrior, enchantress, and archer.  If you’ve played other RPG type games, then you’ll have a pretty good understanding of what each class can do.  Warrior takes the beating and keeps the enemies on him, enchantress heals and does spell damage, and the archer is a ranged attacker.

Once you have your character created, you start the game.  The first thing I did was to go to the town.  Once you get in there, you can see a bunch of other players standing around.  This area is just to allow you to talk, buy, sell, etc. without having to fight monsters.  You do have access to the store to buy items anywhere in the game, so you don’t have to be in the town to buy something.

Now, the way that this game works is not so much like WoW, but probably more along the lines of Diablo.  Everything is instanced, meaning that you have to get a party in order to go out and do something.  Finding parties is quick and easy.  You can find a random party, or you can choose one from a list.  You can also create your own party.  Playing through dungeons allows you to get gold and items for your character.

The game is free to play, but if you want to use real money to buy items and gold, then you can.  Personally, I’d rather pay a monthly fee for a quality game where I don’t have to spend any extra money.

One thing that I noticed is that there doesn’t seem to be any way to trade with other characters.  I guess they intentionally left that out, but I wish it was in the game.  Also, there aren’t any professions or any way to make items that I can tell.  However, the game is young, so maybe we’ll see these in a later release.

It’s a fun game for me so far, and I really really want to get my iPad so I can play it on there.  The iPad version looks so much better.  If you like games like this, then I’d say definitely give it a try.

One more thing I wanted to mention was that I ended up having to buy some gold because I just couldn’t seem to get enough to purchase potions.  So you can play for free, but you may have a hard time getting the things you need for your character.

New Features in iPhone OS 4

The news is out, and the web is abuzz with all of the new features of the next iPhone operating system to be released in June.

Although news of the hardware for the next iPhone model has not been released yet, the new features for the OS have been, but does it live up to the rumors?  Below is a list of the features that Apple has revealed.

  • Multitasking – The one feature that I was hoping for the most.  This will be available for certain apps so that audio, VoIP, or GPS will continue to run in the background.  By double-tapping on the home button, you will bring up a list of icons for apps currently running in the background.  A video has already been posted on Youtube demonstrating this new feature.  More features continued after the video.

  • Game Center – This is Apple’s attempt at making something like Xbox Live for the iPhone.  It will allow people to find people to play a game with quickly, and also allow things like achievement tracking.  I really want to see how this works.
  • iBooks – It’s out for the iPad, and now it’s coming to the iPhone.  It’ll be nice to have both sources to read my electronic books.
  • Fast App Switching – This is sort of a solution for not allowing all apps to run in the background.  It will allow you to freeze an app in its current configuration so that it can be launched right where it left off.  This coupled together with backgrounding of audio, VoIP, and GPS apps will pretty much solve the multitasking problem for mostly everybody.
  • App Folders – This will be nice for easily categorizing apps.  By dragging an app icon over to another app icon, it will automatically place both of those apps into a folder.  The folder will be named according to the category that the app falls in to, but can be renamed by the user.  This will also allow the user to now have 2160 apps installed on their device.
  • Better Mail App – Multiple Exchange accounts!  This will be a nice improvement for people like me who have one for work and still need another for Gmail.  Other features include unified inboxes, fast inbox switching, and threaded messages.
  • Local Notifications – To me this sounds like an app will be allowed to schedule a notification on your iPhone, and then when the app is closed the notification will display at the desired time no matter what app you are in.  It’s kind of like Push Notifications except your phone is handling the scheduling and release of them.
  • Custom Backgrounds – Yay!
  • iAd – In-app advertising.  I’m not sure where I stand on this yet, but it allows users to stay in the app when they click on an advertisement.  I guess it makes it more convenient if you actually want to click on an ad so that you aren’t taken out of the app.  If you want to click on an ad.
  • 5X Digital Zoom – For our crappy camera?  I hope this means we’ll have a better camera on the next gen iPhone.
  • Bluetooth Keyboard support.

This update will be available in June for iPhone 3G and 3GS, and iPod 2nd and 3rd gen.  If you have an iPhone 2G, then you are outta luck (maybe you should buy a new iPhone, hint hint).  The update won’t be available for the iPad until Fall, which I’m pretty disappointed about.  I really want to multitask on my iPad.

All-in-all this looks like an awesome update, but falls a little short of what I was hoping for.  I really wish the UI of the home screen was completely redone.  Gadgets of some sort would have been awesome.  Oh well, I guess I’ll just have to jailbreak again.  What do you think of the new features?

Element Lockscreen for iPhone Review

Update: Video Should be working now.

Element Lockscreen is a free download from Cydia on Jailbroken iPhones.

Late last year I heard about Element, and how it was going to be a free lockscreen mod for the iPhone.  I was excited because it looked like Lockinfo, but was free.  However, I’ve been using Lockinfo until now, and I guess I got spoiled.  Element seems to have some issues with loading quickly on my iPhone.

One thing I didn’t mention in the review is that I wish that there were ways to add-on third-party items.  Like maybe a weather “element” that would give you the weeks forecast.  There is a similar add-on for Lockinfo that I’m used too.

If you haven’t already, watch the review above and let me know what you think in the comments.

Quick Look: Pocket Legends for iPad

Man, I wish I had my iPad.  This game looks awesome, and best of all it’s free to play.

pocket legends game logo. Quick Look: Pocket Legends for iPadPocket Legends from Spacetime Studios is a free MMO for the iPad and soon to be for the iPhone.  They claim that the iPhone version is waiting approval and should be available soon.  I hope it is so I can get my hands on it.  I’m sure the iPad version will be much more enjoyable on a larger screen.

The game is free, but there are in-game purchases.  I’m not sure how often you’ll need to purchase something, but I hope that it’s not too often.  Personally, I’d rather pay a monthly fee than pay for individual items with real money.

Being a WoW player, this will give me something to do when I’m out of the house.  There are gameplay videos up on Youtube if you want a glimpse of what it is like.  Below is the trailer for the game.

iPhone OS 4.0 News Coming April 8

apple-iphone-3g April 8, 2010, Apple will be revealing the features of iPhone OS 4.0.

Finally, something else to get everyone excited about the next iPhone OS version.  I personally can’t wait to finally get the rumors and facts straight.  I’ll be upgrading to the next generation iPhone as soon as it comes out, and I can’t wait to at least see what the new features will be on the OS.

Of course, the biggest rumor seems to be that iPhone OS 4.0 will have multitasking in some form.  Possibly an Expose style program switcher by double-tapping the Home button, revealing icons of currently running apps.

I’m hoping that maybe it will also reveal something about the new hardware for the next generation iPhone.  I’d love to see a front facing camera for video chat, and of course a faster processor, better battery, and more RAM.  However, I doubt we’ll have too many solid facts before June.

It’ll be nice to also find out what new features it will be offering the iPad.  I won’t be receiving my iPad until the end of this month (pre-ordered the 3G version).  Maybe by the time I get my iPad, the new OS will be released.

What are some features that you are looking for in the next iPhone OS release?

SBRotator – Rotate Springboard Icons on iPhone

For my first screencast review, I’ve decided to take a look at the newly released SBRotator app in Cydia.  What it does is it allows you to rotate your iPhone so that the icons get rotated also.  Take a look at the screencast to get an idea of what I’m talking about.  I’m giving this a 4.5 out of 5 rating for right now since it seems a little sluggish on my iPhone 3G.  Other than that, it’s simple and does what it claims to do.  The app is $1.99 from the BigBoss repo, so go give it a shot.

There do seem to be some limitations with that app right now.  Categories is reported as not working, and I’ve seen some other people complaining about other apps not working right.

Also, you could give the app a try from the BeYouriPhone repo, but definitely purchase it if you think it’s worth it.  Let me know what you think in the comments.

Why Josh is buying an iPad

The iPad is just an oversized iPod/iPhone!

Yes, that’s true, and geeks everywhere hate that.  I myself am a techie, and I hate the idea of the iPad being as closed as the iPhone, and I don’t like the fact that it uses the same OS.  However, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t a great tablet for consuming media.

I’ve seen all of these reviews online praising how amazing the device is, but in reality we’ve had this same device in our hands since the iPod touch came out.  The only difference is that it is BIGGER, oooooh.

I respect Apple and I think they make great products, but I’m no fanboy.  One thing that I’ve wondered is, how much work did they really put into this thing?  To me, it seems like it wouldn’t have been hard at all.  The OS was already created, and the hardware is just updated from the iPhone.  The only difference is maybe some of the built-in apps needed to be updated, and the iBook store needed to be created.  But really, how much work did it take?  Apple is making a huge profit off of something that probably really didn’t take them that long to make.

Now, on to my point of why I’m buying one.  I’ve seen all of these reviews on the web saying, “techie’s will hate it!”, an “non-techies will love it!”.  Well, what about those people like me who are techies, but are also gadget lovers?  I found myself being torn between both types of reviews.  So I decided that I’d go ahead and buy one.

I know personally, I’m going to have a lot of fun playing around with it.  And the big thing for me is going to be the iBook store, as many others have also stated.  Personally, I’m holding out on the 3G version coming out later this month.  I may not use 3G, but I figure that I might as well get it just incase.

Those are just my thoughts.  This post is not intended to convince anybody to buy it.  I know it will be very similar to my iPhone, but I really feel like buying a new gadget right now.

Random Thoughts from Josh

On my quest for enhanced productivity, I usually find myself adding more junk to my life.

Recently I’ve been thinking of what I’m going to do with my blogs.  Take this blog for example.  The domain name is original, plus it fits perfectly into the whole iPhone/iPad addiction going on right now.  I may be able to get quite a bit out of it if I decided to sell.  The only problem is, I’m not too sure how and where I would do that.  I’ve been thinking, “Ooh, maybe I’ll buy an iPad”, but won’t I just be adding more junk to my already hectic life?  I find myself piling more and more on top of what I want to do.  For example, I’m a software engineer recently out of college with a new job.  I’m working from home for now, but once I start commuting, I’ll have a four hour commute overall each day.  I’m not going to have any energy to do anything else after work.  However, I like to go to the gym 3-4 days a week, read up on the latest tech news, hang out with friends, possibly play some WoW, and now I’m thinking of getting back into blogging.  All of this won’t be possible once I start commuting.

This sounds like way too much, and in fact it is, but I think that’s what makes life interesting for me.  I’m far from being a workaholic, but I just always like to be doing something.  I think for now I’m going to keep this blog.  I’d like to get a new custom design up for it someday, but who knows when that will happen.  I’d also like to set a goal for at least 3 REVIEWS a week on here.  Posts like this wouldn’t count since it’s not a review.  I’m probably going to start screen-casting my reviews since it would take less work overall than writing each review.  I’m also going to go ahead and buy an iPad.  I was pretty set on not buying an iPad since I thought of it as just an over-sized iPod, but I think I’ve changed my mind.  Look for another post coming up on why I’m going to buy one.

Sorry for the randomness with this post.  It was just a way for me to clarify to myself what I want out of my life for now.

I’ve been using Cydia since I Jailbroke my iPhone, and chances are that you have too.  Cydia is extremely slow when it is initially loaded, and always has to reload the data every time you install an app.  This is VERY undesirable when trying to quickly install or upgrade something.  Sometimes I hear that an app updated, but I just don’t want to open up Cydia to update the app.  Thank goodness that somebody came up with the idea to create Rock.

Rock is available on Cydia.  So just open up Cydia and install it.  Now, when you have Rock installed, I’d recommend using it instead of Cydia.  Rock does everything that Cydia does, but does it faster.  No more long loading times, and you can also choose to install more apps before respringing.  Rock already knows what apps you have installed through Cydia, so it will notify you of upgrades to the apps that you already have installed.
