I’ve been using Cydia since I Jailbroke my iPhone, and chances are that you have too.  Cydia is extremely slow when it is initially loaded, and always has to reload the data every time you install an app.  This is VERY undesirable when trying to quickly install or upgrade something.  Sometimes I hear that an app updated, but I just don’t want to open up Cydia to update the app.  Thank goodness that somebody came up with the idea to create Rock.

Rock is available on Cydia.  So just open up Cydia and install it.  Now, when you have Rock installed, I’d recommend using it instead of Cydia.  Rock does everything that Cydia does, but does it faster.  No more long loading times, and you can also choose to install more apps before respringing.  Rock already knows what apps you have installed through Cydia, so it will notify you of upgrades to the apps that you already have installed. Description: To catch your attention, this is a must have app.  I’ve been using Textfree on my iPhone for a long time now to text a few of my more tech-savy friends.  TextNow, like Textfree, gives you an email address to send and receive SMS messages for a much lower price than through AT&T.  The only problem is, some people don’t know that they can send SMS messages through email.  That’s why I only did it with my more tech-savy friends.  However, one of my friends got a new phone recently, and now when he tries to send SMS messages to an email address, they come through blank.  So today, I decided to look at the App Store to see if anything new had come out since I downloaded Textfree.  On the top of the Social Networking list, I found TextNow, which claimed to have Google Voice integration.  I had to give this a try since Google Voice uses a real phone number instead of an email address. Description: I use my iPhone for playing music all the time.  I don’t just use the iPod either.  I use Pandora, Imeem, Rhapsody, and other music services depending on my mood.  (By the way, the Rhapsody app idea is great, although the quality is lacking).  The only problem with playing music from an app other than the iPod app is that you always have to keep the app open.  Now, of course on an unjailbroken iPhone, this isn’t possible.  However, if you have jailbroken your iPhone then Music Controls will allow you to stream music from these apps in the background while you do other things on your iPhone.

Pros: Background music playing from apps like Pandora, Imeem, Rhapsody, etc. is possible, and gives you controls for controlling your music much like you would while playing music from the iPod app.  This includes when your phone is locked, double clicking on the home button will bring up controls for the music currently playing.  Also, when in another application, double clicking on the home button will pop up a window with controls for the music currently playing.  They are always adding new apps to the list of compatible apps.

Cons:  The only con that I can think of would be the price.  $4.99 is a little pricey, but it does what it says it will do, and it does it well.

Conclusion: This app is definitely a must have for my jailbroken phone.  If you haven’t jailbroken your phone, then maybe this app will persuade you to.

Tangram Deluxe – Tangram Puzzle Game for the iPhone

Description: Tangram Deluxe is a game in which you solve a set of tangram puzzles.  If you haven’t played a tangram game before, it is basically a puzzle where you have 7 pieces.  These pieces never change as you progress through each puzzle, but you are given different images that you need to make out of these 7 pieces.

Pros: Well, the first thing that I noticed when I opened the app was that multiple languages were supported.  I only have a need to use English, but it’s a nice feature for those that need something other than English.

Now, I’ve played some other tangram games, and something that stood out to me was that the orange piece (the parallelogram) can be flipped. That is the only piece that can be flipped, while all of the others can only be rotated.  I haven’t seen this in other tangram games, but I think it is a nice touch.

Tangram games are also very addicting, at least for me.  Normally after I have been playing them for a while, I start to see them in my head…

Cons: One thing that bugged me was that when I finished a category it went to a screen that had the options “Next” and “Menu” but the buttons didn’t seem to work.  I could tell that the app didn’t freeze since I could drag the screen around and select text; I just couldn’t use either of the buttons.  So I had to quit the app and go back in.

Sometimes I had some trouble grabbing some of the shapes, especially the small green triangle.  It didn’t always happen, but sometimes I’d be tapping on my screen all around the green triangle trying to move it, which was pretty annoying.

Another thing that bugged me was if I went to the menu during one of my games, I couldn’t resume my game in progress.  I’d have to restart the puzzle all over again.

Also, sometimes I noticed that some of the pieces could only go in certain spots, when there were actually a number of combinations that could be used to fill in the shape.

Conclusion: Definitely addicting if puzzles are your thing.  Tangram puzzles can be a little easy though once you get the hang of it.  One thing I would suggest is to allow the pieces to snap to the grid even if they aren’t in the right spot.  That would add a little difficulty to it.  Also, allow more combinations for certain puzzles so that the pieces don’t have to be in a specific spot. Something else to consider would be to have the shapes snap at every 45 degrees or so of rotation. That would allow for easier positioning on the grid. Other than that, it’s a pretty straight forward game.  I’d say it’s worth the $1.99 if you like puzzles.  I give it a 3.5/5 due to a few of the issues mentioned above.

Zenonia Released for the iPhone

Gamevil has recently launched a game for the iPhone in the U.S. called Zenonia (App Store link).  Looking at this game makes me remember all of the time spent playing Zelda on the SNES way back when.  You can watch a video below showing you the first ten minutes of gameplay.  However, most of it seems to be cutscreens.

Most of what I’ve read seems to state that the controls are a little wonky, but other than that everything is amazing.  I’m definitely going to be getting this game and playing it on a long trip next week.  Look for a review up here in the coming weeks.  The app seems to have an average 5 star rating in the App Store, which is pretty amazing seeing as it has been rated 237 times at the time of writing this article.  Here are some screenshots from the App store as well.  You can’t beat $5.99 for a full blown RPG on the iPhone.

Description: The Kindle app brings the ability to download and read books bought from the Kindle store on Amazon to your iPhone.

Pros: It’s great for those of us who don’t have a lot of money to buy a Kindle, but we already have an iPhone.  It allows bookmarking pages, changing font size, quick navigation, and easy readability.  If you have a Kindle, then it can supposedly sync bookmarks between devices.

Cons: It is a very basic app.  You don’t have all of the fancy features that you’d see on the Kindle device.  There is no text searching, looking up words in the dictionary, and supposedly you can’t download magazines and newspapers according to some reviews in the App store.  Also, it seems like some people are having trouble syncing bookmarks between their Kindle device and the iPhone app.  I can’t vouch for any of these issues involving the Kindle device, but they are definitely worth mentioning if true.  Another feature that may bug some users is the lack of horizontal reading.

Conclusion: For a free app, it’s decent.  However, the cost to buy a book and read it on the iPhone may not be worth it yet.  You may want to wait until Amazon includes more features in this app before buying books to read.  Personally, I think it’s fine since all I’d be using it for is reading books, but I can see the trouble that others may have if they own both a Kindle and an iPhone.  I’m giving the app a 2.5 out of 5 since Amazon hasn’t fulfilled the user’s requests.

Brushes – Painting on the Go

Description: Recently featured on the App Store, Brushes is a “mobile painting” application for the iPhone and iPod touch.

Pros: Brushes is a really well-designed app with a simple interface that enables you to paint everything from smiley faces to elaborate portraits (provided you’ve got the artistic chops, of course). You can start with a blank canvas, or you can have some fun by importing a photo from your photo library (yay for fake moustaches!).

Brushes features some serious finger-pinching zoom, anywhere from 70% to 800%, allowing you to really get in close if need be. You can choose your color and transparency level from the wheel color palette, or you can use the eyedropper tool to select a color directly from the canvas. And if you make a mistake, fret not: the developers of Brushes claim “virtually unlimited undos,” and I have no idea what the limit actually is, but it certainly feels unlimited.

You can connect to Brushes through your iPhone or iPod’s Wi-Fi connection and your web browser, which not only allows you to view and download paintings, but also lets you download .brushes files. One of Brushes most intriguing features is it’s free companion Mac OS X application (sorry Windows users), Brushes Viewer. Brushes records all of the strokes you make as you paint and stores these in a .brushes file, and Brushes Viewer lets you watch your paintings unfold stroke-by-stroke. Neat stuff.

Cons: Brushes Viewer is Mac OS X only, so if you’re a Windows user, you’re missing out on one of the coolest features of Brushes.

Conclusion: I snagged this app when it was on sale for $2.99, although I would gladly pay the current price of $4.99. If you’re looking for a drawing/painting app for the iPhone, you can’t go wrong with Brushes.

Pandora Radio for the iPhone

VN:F [1.8.3_1051]
Rating: 0.0/5 (0 votes cast)

Description: For those that have been living under a rock the past few years, Pandora Internet radio (www.pandora.com) aims to play “The music you like”. Basically you create a “Station”, based on an artist or genre, and then as it plays music for you, you rate the songs with a thumbs up or a thumbs down. Songs that get a thumbs up get played more often, and songs with similar qualities are added to the circulation, while songs that get a thumbs down are skipped and similar songs are removed. Drawbacks include the fact that, like radio, you can’t choose what songs you want to hear, only artist or genre, you can’t repeat songs you like, and you can only skip so many songs per day.

Pandora for iPhone is essentially the Pandora website, in a streamlined iPhone version. It’s a great tool to expand your musical taste, but suffers the same drawbacks as the website, as well as a few functionality issues that make it hard to recommend.

Interface: As with most iPhone/iPod touch applications, interface is key, and Pandora pretty much nailed it.

The most important functions are laid out across the bottom of the screen, allowing you to quickly switch between stations, the station creator, your bookmarks, and settings. Music selection is arranged in the same way the iPhone’s music library is arranged, making it a familiar interface, and easy to use. The Now Playing screen is similar to the iPhone’s, with the rewind button removed and thumbs up and thumbs down buttons added. A button in the top right corner allows you to display artist information, and the reason why the song was selected for you. All other features, including artist search and genre selection, should be more than familiar to iPhone users.

Pros: Good free app with an extensive musical library available for streaming. Good if you want to listen to something on the go and don’t have your computer with you. The music quality is good, buffers quickly, and usually doesn’t skip, which can be a problem with streaming media. A good clean interface makes it easy to quickly start playing your music.

Cons: Just like the website, Pandora for iPhone does not allow you to choose specific songs or repeat tracks. This is not Pandora’s fault, they are limited by the music industry regulations, but this is a frustrating drawback. The biggest drawback I’ve encountered is that, like other streaming music programs for iPhone, is that it cannot run in the background, so the app must be open to listen to the music. This is compensated by the fact that it resumes the previous song you were playing when you closed it, but still severely limits the functionality.

iPhone vs. iPod Touch: The iPhone clearly wins out here, with the ability to access the internet anywhere. iPod touch is limited to areas with wifi, and the restrictions that come with it.

Conclusion: A good application that does what it’s supposed to, but not as well as one might hope. In Pandora’s defense, most of the restrictions and issues are out of their control. This does not change the fact that I rarely use this application unless I’m completely occupied with something else (like writing this review) and have no need to use my iPod touch for anything other than music.

Description: Now Playing looks up your location and finds movies near you.  It gives you the time, location, and even a rating from a site like RottenTomatoes.com.  It also gives you a listing of upcoming movies, and a listing of newly released movies on DVD.

Pros: The ratings feature is the best addition to this app in my opinion.  That way I can find what other people think before deciding to go watch the movie.  There are three different sources for the ratings: RottenTomatoes, Metacritic, and Google.  Also, finding which theater is closest to you is a nice touch.  If you have a Netflix account, it even is able to look up movies on there.  I don’t have a Netflix account, so I can’t say whether or not this option works.

Cons: I wish they would add the ratings to newly released movies on DVD.  That section has a lot of movies but it’s hard to tell what is worth watching.

Conclusion: Definitely worth the download if you like to go to the movies often.  I’m always watching some new movie every week, so it is nice to be able to always have this app available.  It’s also a free app, so you can’t go wrong with the price.

Tweetie – Twitter Client for the iPhone

Description: I’m somewhat of a Twitter addict, so I have many ways to access Twitter.  Of course, I use my desktop client of choice, Tweetdeck, then I use many web tools to post to Twitter like Feedly.  However, sometimes I’m not at my computer and I’d like to post to Twitter, or I’d like to see what everybody is tweeting about.  Tweetie is a great choice for the iPhone, and at $2.99 it’s not that expensive.

Pros: It has many features that you probably won’t even use, but at least it has them.  One such feature is adding multiple accounts.  I know there are many people like me who only have one account, but I have heard plenty of complaints from others about apps never allowing more than one account.  The layout of the interface is very nice, and reminds me of the SMS built into the iPhone.

One of my favorite features is the Trends view.  If you click on the “More” button at the bottom, it will show you a list with an option “Trends”.  If you click on that option, it will show you what is currenlty popular on Twitter.  Then you can click on each option to see what the current tweets are in that category.

The “More” menu offers many other options such as Nearby and Search.  The Nearby feature allows Tweetie to find your location and find recent tweets from people near you.  I’m not really sure what use that would have, but it is a neat feature nonetheless.

Another feature that makes Tweetie really stand out from others is the inclusion of Instapaper.  Instapaper, for those of you who don’t know, is a sort of bookmarking service.  Therefore, if you find somebody linking something interesting on Tweetie and you want to bookmark it for later, you can use Instapaper to save that link for later.  To enable Instapaper, you need to exit out of Tweetie and go to your iPhone settings.  Then scroll down to where it says Tweetie.  Under that option you will be shown many other options for customizing Tweetie.  One of these options is Instapaper.  You’ll have to insert your username for Instapaper if you want it to be able to use it.

Cons: Really, the only con that I can think of is there is no auto-refresh while the app is running.  You have to manually refresh it whenever you want to see new tweets.  I think there should be some option so that you can enable auto-refresh while the app is running.

Conclusion: This is definitely the best Twitter app for the iPhone in my opinion.  I’m giving it a 4.5 out of 5 because of the one con mentioned above.  If you are a Twitter addict, or if you just use Twitter occassionally, I’d recommend downloading it.
